Character Canon History: Kara grew up on Argo, sister planet of Krypton. The two planets had a higher tech level than contemporary Earth, though their space travel was limited. Jor-El, a scientist predicted that Krypton would be destroyed by tremors, but his warnings fell on deaf ears. Desperate, he sent his son off in a pod to ensure his survival.
Though Argo itself survived the catastrophe that destroyed Krypton, the people of Argo were doomed by it. Argo was thrown out of orbit to the far reaches of the solar system, too far to sustain life. A scientist named Kala In-Ze placed herself and her family in stasis, hoping for rescue. Kal El, last Son of Krypton, now living dual lives as Clark Kent and Superman, found the family’s stasis pods, but time had ravaged all but Kara’s beyond recovery.
When Clark took her back to Earth, Kara found that her physiology gave her great power when exposed to the light of a yellow sun. She established a civilian identity of Kara Kent, staying with Clark’s adopted parents on the family farm in Smallville, Kansas. She pleaded with Clark to let her fight crime with him, but he refused, telling her to wait. Kara ignored his wishes and pursued the high-tech criminal organization Intergang, revealing a ploy by the evil New God Darkseid to destroy the Earth.
After Kara risked her life stopping Darkseid’s Furies and deflecting a meteor aimed at Metropolis, Superman reluctantly welcomed Supergirl to crime-fighting. He still kept her largely confined to Smallville, wanting to protect her
When Darkseid turned Superman against the planet Earth, Kara stood against the Man of Steel with somewhat disastrous results. Superman eventually broke free of Darkseid’s control and rushed Kara to Star Labs where he intimidated his friend and ally, Professor Emil Hamilton into operating on her to save her life. Unknown to the heroes, Hamilton used this opportunity to collect Kara’s DNA for use in future experiments.
Character Personality: Kara is always eager to help and usually just as eager to have fun and explore new things when no one around needs saving. She’s naturally energetic, which means being stuck on a farm in the middle of Smallville wears on her pretty quickly. She'd prefer to be in motion and at the center of the action.
Kara doesn't so much lack foresight as refuse to use it. She's impulsive and tends to charge ahead without much planning, instead relying on her instincts and ability to think on her feet to get her out of any trouble she runs into. She has a tendency to grandstand and go for the flashy, She also has a problem listening to orders, even though most of the orders she gets tend to come from her new family, people she does care about and trust.
Kara is gregarious and charismatic, but the nature of her civilian identity limits her contact with the outside world, to her unending frustration. This, combined with the recent shock of losing her homeworld, means she hasn't made many deep connections outside of her adopted family. The closest friend she's made outside the Kents is Batgirl, meaning that unlike Clark, she has no attachments particular to her civilian identity, nor any real attachment to it.
The Supergirl identity she created is a symbol of her support of her cousin and her commitment to helping people. While that second part is less than fully fleshed out due to her lack of experience, she has an overwhelming altruistic drive to use her new-found superpowers to help people. She's desperate to get out and help her cousin save the Earth, even if she's still at the age where she makes a mess. Her new world is a lot more breakable than she is, and she can end up doing damage she never intended.
While she's still reacting to the destruction of her home, she's trying to start over and takes any opportunities she can to immerse herself in Earth culture, even if she'd much rather be immersed than Metropolis's culture than Smallville's. Despite what she's been through, Kara is a naturally positive person trying to make the best of every situation, for herself and for everyone.

So Kara's stuck out here on the farm. Again. For about the billionth day in a row. The Kents had taken the tractor in some kind of unimaginably boring crop swap, leaving Kara with little to do but wallow in monotony and contemplate how much longer she'll be stuck doing it. Clark doesn't have a scheduled visit any time in the near future; this is Smallville's only 'cultural event' for the next two months; and even the TV has nothing on besides reruns and news reports on places she'd much rather be than here.
There's chores, of course, but those are even less than a drag. Unsupervised, she can finish them in five minutes, tops. All it takes is a little yellow-sun magic and a single song on the radio and every cow, chicken and crop is taken care of. “A little fun can't hurt, right?” She asks her cat, offering him the most persuasive, confident grin she can muster and getting nothing but a disinterested 'mow' as a reply. “Yeah, you're bored too. I'm going shopping. Don't tell Ma and Pa, and be good!”
Her 'flight suit' is actually made out of a few ripped sheets that Ma Kent was going to throw out anyway. Hopefully they'd be proud of her for that little detail – she was doing her part to save the environment. Or at least somebody's part. Supergirl could do way more if they'd just let her.
She manages to duck into a clothing store and pick up a cute little discount dress before she gets too many stares for her improptu blanket-robes. And then it's time to head out into the mall proper. This is more like it, even if she'd still rather be out smashing heads. But the news says Clark and the police have most everything under control for the moment, and a daytrip to the mall is a lot less likely to get her in trouble. She smiles at a few passersby, and uses a little bit of discreet X-Ray vision to scope out the nearby stores. It's on now.
